Family armoring is one of the fastest-growing reasons clients come to us — particularly families with an elevated wealth profile, a public name, or kidnap-and-ransom concerns for children. The brief is different from an executive build: it is less about boardroom discretion and more about seating, car-seat anchors, visibility, luggage and everyday usability. Here is how we think about the best family platforms.
What makes a vehicle right for a family
- Seating and car seats: Room for three-across or a third row, with proper LATCH/ISOFIX anchors retained through the armoring.
- Discretion: A family vehicle should look ordinary. Our factory-fresh exterior standard matters most here — nobody should be able to tell.
- Ride comfort: Smooth, quiet, easy to get children in and out of.
- Visibility and ease of driving: Many family vehicles are driven by a parent, not a trained security driver.
The platforms we recommend most
Cadillac Escalade / Chevrolet Suburban
The Escalade and Suburban are the family favourites: three rows, huge luggage capacity, body-on-frame chassis that carry armor beautifully, and a comfortable, commanding ride. The Suburban in particular is hard to beat for a large family that travels with gear.
Lexus LX 600 / Toyota Land Cruiser
For families who prioritise reliability and low running costs, the LX 600 and Land Cruiser are superb — globally serviceable, durable, and genuinely anonymous. The LX adds Lexus refinement; the Land Cruiser adds go-anywhere toughness for families posted abroad.
Range Rover
The Range Rover is the discreet-luxury family choice — quiet, comfortable, and completely understated. Air suspension makes it one of the smoothest armored rides, and nobody looks twice at a Range Rover in an affluent neighbourhood.
What protection level does a family need?
Most families are best served by CEN BR4 — full handgun and carjacking protection, with the lightest weight penalty and the easiest everyday drivability. Families in higher-threat postings (certain overseas assignments, specific credible threats) step up to BR6. We almost never recommend BR7 for family use; the weight and cost rarely match the realistic threat. Our specialists assess this honestly during your consultation.
Specifying for family life
Beyond the armor, we commonly add: retained third-row seating and rear-seat entertainment, an intercom to talk with a driver, child-friendly power-window controls, run-flat tires (standard on every build), and a discreet GPS tracker. We keep the interior fully OEM so your child seats, sunshades and the school-pickup routine all work exactly as before.
