“How much does it cost to armor a car?” is the first question almost every buyer asks — and the honest answer is: it depends on three things you control. This 2026 guide breaks down the real cost of an armored vehicle in Canada by protection level and platform, so you can build a budget before you ever pick up the phone. Every figure below is in Canadian dollars and reflects current 2026 pricing from our Vaughan, Ontario armoring facility.

The three parts of an armored-vehicle budget

The total cost of an armored vehicle is the sum of three separate line items. Confusing them is why online estimates vary so wildly:

  1. The base vehicle — the factory car, SUV or van before any armor. This is whatever the platform costs at the dealer, from roughly CAD $75,000 for a Chevrolet Suburban to CAD $250,000+ for a Mercedes-Maybach or Range Rover SV.
  2. The armoring package — the ballistic work itself: transparent armor (bullet-resistant glass), ballistic steel or composite in the body, floor and roof, suspension and brake upgrades, and run-flat tires. This is the number that scales with protection level.
  3. Options and delivery — smoke screen, electronic siren, intercom, video recording, custom interiors, plus enclosed transport, customs and documentation.

When someone quotes “a cheap armored car for $90,000,” they usually mean the armoring package only, on a vehicle you already own. Always confirm which of the three parts a quote includes.

Armoring cost by protection level (2026)

The armoring package — base vehicle excluded — is driven almost entirely by the ballistic standard you choose. Here are current 2026 bands for a full-size SUV, the most-common platform we build:

Protection levelStopsArmoring package (CAD)Weight added
CEN BR4 / NIJ IIIAHandgun rounds up to .44 Magnum$95,000 – $145,000400 – 580 kg
CEN BR6 / NIJ III7.62×51mm NATO rifle (FN FAL, hunting rifles)$175,000 – $250,000650 – 850 kg
CEN BR7 / NIJ IV7.62×51mm armor-piercing ammunition$275,000 – $370,000900 – 1,150 kg

BR6 is the most-common civilian standard worldwide — comprehensive rifle protection without an unmanageable weight penalty. If you are unsure which level fits your situation, our BR4 vs BR6 vs BR7 guide walks through it in detail. Most buyers in North American, European and major-Asian cities are correctly served by BR4 or BR6; BR7 is reserved for high-threat operating environments.

Total project cost by platform

Add the base vehicle to the armoring package and you get the number that matters — the total project cost. Here are typical 2026 totals (base vehicle + BR6 armoring + common options) for our most-requested platforms:

Move to BR4 and subtract roughly CAD $80,000 to $100,000 from the armoring portion; move to BR7 and add CAD $90,000 to $150,000. Sedans generally cost slightly less to armor than SUVs; specialty and limousine builds cost more because of custom interior work.

What options add to the cost

Beyond the ballistic package, most builds include a handful of options. Typical installed 2026 pricing:

  • Run-flat tire inserts (all four) — included in every build as standard.
  • Electronic siren, PA and warning lights — CAD $3,000 – $9,000.
  • Intercom and external PA — CAD $2,500 – $6,000.
  • Video recording / DVR system — CAD $3,000 – $8,000.
  • Smoke screen or other counter-measures — CAD $8,000 – $18,000.
  • Bespoke interior (specialty and limousine builds) — CAD $15,000 – $80,000+.
  • International delivery (ocean freight, customs, documentation) — CAD $8,000 – $25,000 depending on destination.

Can you save money buying from stock?

Yes — on time, and sometimes on price. A custom build runs 10 to 16 weeks. A pre-built vehicle from our current stock ships within about two weeks of contract, at a locked price with no exchange-rate exposure between order and delivery. Stock vehicles carry the same warranty, certifications and service support as a custom build; the only trade-off is that the specification is fixed (our most-popular configuration). If that spec fits your needs, a stock vehicle is both the fastest and the most price-certain path.

How to budget with confidence

A realistic 2026 budget for a fully-armored BR6 SUV in Canada — base vehicle included — is CAD $280,000 to $420,000, depending on the platform and options. For a BR6 executive sedan, budget CAD $260,000 to $650,000. For BR4, subtract roughly CAD $80,000 to $100,000. These are total project numbers, not armoring-only.

Because base-vehicle prices vary so much across trims, the only accurate number is a quote on the exact configuration you want. We provide an itemised written quote within 72 hours of a free 30-minute consultation, and every quote is valid for 60 days regardless of currency movement — so the price you approve is the price you pay. Every Exec Armor build is CEN BR4–BR7 and NIJ-equivalent certified, ISO 9001 manufactured, and delivered worldwide from our Vaughan, Ontario facility.

Beyond the sticker: total cost of ownership

The purchase price is only part of the picture. An armored vehicle carries a handful of ongoing costs worth budgeting for from day one. Insurance in Ontario typically runs modestly higher than the same vehicle unarmored, because the replacement value is higher — expect a premium reflecting the total project cost, and work with a broker experienced in specialty vehicles. Maintenance is the area most owners underestimate: the added armored mass means brakes, tires and suspension components wear faster, and service should be done by technicians who understand the build. Our armored-vehicle maintenance program runs on an 8,000 km / 6-month schedule and keeps the ballistic certification valid. Fuel economy drops roughly 10 to 20 percent versus the factory vehicle, proportional to the armor weight. Resale, on the other hand, holds up well: a properly-built, well-maintained armored vehicle from a certified manufacturer retains strong value in a market where supply is limited and lead times are long. Factoring these in, most owners find the true annual cost of ownership is dominated by the one-time build, with running costs only modestly above a comparable luxury vehicle.
