What are the Top Places for Road Trips in Ontario?

Toronto is a great jumping off point for many great road trip options.  There are some of Ontario’s most interesting and beautiful sights that can be reached easily for a quick day trip.

1) Belfountain: Famous for great ice cream and vibrant colours, this area has some of the best country roadside stores in Ontario.  It is best enjoyed in the heat of the summer.  Fall is another great time to go and see this beautiful area as the trees are truly a sight to behold. With rich oranges and yellows it makes for a great photo opportunity with friends and family.

2) Hockley Valley: No trip north of Toronto would be complete with a trip to the Hockley Valley General Store.  The place is a real gem of times gone by and a landmark many will recognize.  Popping into the store as a pit stop as you explore some of the scenic surroundings of the area is a great way to kick off a day in the country.

3) Campbellville and the Escarpment:  When the sun comes out, so do the motorbike enthusiasts.  This area is very popular with those who want to get out on the open road.  Sunday morning is a great time to catch a look at some beautiful bikes and convertibles.  The food cannot be missed either.

4) Niagara Peninsula:  This is one of the best drives on the list, winding roads and will set you up for one or more days in the area.  Checking out Niagara-on-the-lake as well as St. Catherines, will have you loving Ontario more than you ever knew you could.

5) Port Britain: As you head east of Toronto along the picturesque lakeshore you will have a great view of Lake Ontario and as the miles fly by you will see the city quickly melt away to a much more relaxed and natural vibe.  This drive is great in all seasons as the lake always looks great.

6) Hastings:  Speaking of lakes, Rice Lake is another sight that cannot be missed when headed this way.  A really nice drive through the Ganaraska Forest, lots of rolling hills that are thrilling to drive on.

7) Collingwood: This is a trip you could combine with a stop at the Hockley Valley General Store.  Make sure that once you are there you stop by Ontario’s highest point of elevation at Dundalk.  A sight to be seen for sure!

8) Picton ferry: A flat landscape filled with vineyards and orchards awaits anyone headed this way.  The Lake on the Mountain is something to check off this list while in this neck of the woods and something the kids are sure to love.

9) Cottage Country: This is where Torontonians flock to in great numbers as soon as the weather becomes palatable again.  A great many will have their own cottages, or at least know someone who does.

Getting out of the downtown area of Toronto can be a real boost to the energy levels, there are many more exciting places to see just a small drive away.  Taking the time to hop in a car and explore the sights and sounds that Ontario has to offer is recommended.  All of the places mentioned above can be done in a day, but why not take a long weekend to explore an area.  You will not be disappointed as there are many activities for all ages to do all year.  Even a couple of days away in the fresh air can have you thinking you we’re on vacation for a week.
